10 Simple Ways to Reduce Food Waste 🍗

When we waste food we’re wasting both our own money (an average of $1800 per year for a family of four according to 2017 data from the National Resources Defense Council) and the natural resources that went into producing that food. What’s more we’re unnecessarily throwing usable food into landfills. Luckily there are so many ways to reduce food waste both for your wallet and the environment. Have you considered buying items in bulk switching out your pantry containers or buying “ugly” fruit? Try one or two changes or go all Captain Planet—the choice is yours to tackle food waste!

Just like we go through our books and clothes it’s important to take inventory of what’s in our refrigerators. This will prevent you from buying a third bottle of ranch dressing when you already have several on the shelves (one nearly expired one year old!). Throw out the produce and condiments that have gone bad (RIP) and put the produce that’s nearly expired out of sight so you don’t forget to use it.

If you find yourself routinely throwing out slimy vegetables and moldy fruit you may be a little overambitious with your fruit and vegetable purchases. It’s wise to buy in bulk for canned and dry goods that have a long shelf life but take a look at your cooking and eating habits and try to plan your grocery list accordingly. If your weekly routine could use a little change try shopping European by making shorter more frequent trips to the store to pick up what you need for the next day or two.
