How to make a Gin & Tonic #LetsCocktail

Tonic water cocktails are generally simple. Many follow the formula of gin and tonic: a shot of liqueur with tonic water accented with citrus. And yet they are anything but boring. Tonic mixed drinks are lightly refreshing and invigorating and the flavor possibilities are surprisingly diverse.

True to its name tonic water was originally a medicinal tonic. Quinine is the main ingredient that gives soda water its dry bitter taste and it has long been used to prevent malaria. To make the medicine more palatable British soldiers in the 19th century were given tonic water (often supplemented with gin). Today tonic water is no longer used for its healing properties but is instead consumed as a drink.

That distinctive flavor profile is what makes tonic water an excellent match for a variety of spirits. It’s fizzy but not too sweet and its flavor is relatively transparent gently enhancing the spirit’s natural flavors. While gin and vodka are the most common options tonic works just as well with brandy tequila whiskey liqueurs and amaros. A variety of fruits herbs and spices can enhance these mixed drinks. Even some cocktails that don’t require it do very well with a dose of tonic.
