Along with classics like Diet Coke and Diet Dr. Pepper you’ll find sugar-free versions of root beers fruit punches and more. Now there are prebiotic diet sodas packed with fiber insulin and other goodies.

I ordered diet sodas and made everyone angry

If you’re a die-hard diet soda drinker like me you might be wondering which of these new cans on the market are worth your time. I was curious to see how some of these other offerings compare to each other and to tried and trusted standards. And then there’s the question of “zero” vs. “diet” sodas: What’s the difference between Diet Coke and Coke Zero? Is one better than the other?

To answer all these questions I personally tasted some of the best diet sodas on the market using taste as the main characteristic. Unless otherwise noted all sodas cost $2.28 per bottle or $7.28 per 12-pack. Here are the results of the taste adventure I had in the world of diet soda. May this help you find your new drink!

This highly caffeinated soda—at least the regular version—has a pretty serious cult following especially among Appalachian coal miners who rely on the caffeine to stay alert. With acquaintances raving about Mountain Dew’s taste and productivity-boosting caffeine I cracked open my bottle of the diet version curious to see what I’d been missing. The strong yellow-green color vaguely reminiscent of ’80s Hi-C Ecto Cooler was a bit of a shock. What’s more Diet Mountain Dew contains among other things concentrated orange juice which may have contributed to the 10 calories per 20-ounce bottle.
