I cook salmon once or twice a month for my family. While I love having fresh wild-caught fillets on hand I honestly find frozen salmon more convenient for weeknight meals. I usually buy frozen salmon for this reason but sometimes I eat salmon that I bought fresh and ended up freezing. Luckily both store-bought frozen salmon and fresh salmon that I freeze are easy to thaw for quick weeknight dinners.
The USDA recommends thawing frozen food in three ways: in cold water in the refrigerator or in the microwave. We’re going to trust the experts and follow those guidelines to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. And we’ll walk you through each of the three approved methods below.
