I've been a professional designer for about 3 years now and before that I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees in graphic design (that's 7 years of schooling—it took a while). Over the past ten years in the graphic design field, I have discovered that there are certain characteristics among my fellow students and now my professional peers that have made me think that perhaps there are reasons why someone shouldn't become a graphic designer.

This led me to the video you are watching now with my 4 reasons not to become a graphic designer.

1. You shouldn't become a graphic designer if you're allergic to hard work. If you want to become a graphic designer just because it looks fun and you want to get paid to listen to music and draw all day. Well, I listen to music and often sketch design concepts, but that's not the core of a graphic designer's life.

As a graphic designer, I learn new skills daily, listen to upcoming technologies, and think about how they will affect what I do as a designer. This is not a career where you learn a single set of skills and then ride around for 40 years.

Since graduating, I have learned to code, design WordPress websites, create motion graphics in After Effects and Premiere Pro, as well as hone my skills with standard design programs, Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign.

2. You shouldn't become a graphic designer if you are NOT patient. There will be times when ideas are hard to come by. You will have to conduct grueling research, client meetings, and troubleshoot hardware and software issues.

Patience with the lack of creative ideas often comes from distraction and an overly saturated workload. Sometimes you need to step away from your desk with a sketchbook, take a walk, and think critically about the design you're working on.

Client meetings are time-consuming and can often feel disorganized, similar to an emotional dump when your friend is going through an explosive breakup. For what? Because the client is not a designer. They try to explain in words the image they have in mind. It's difficult for non-creative people and they need help getting ideas out of their heads. You shouldn't become a graphic designer if you aren't patient enough to help clients through this process.

When dealing with hardware and software problems, you'll find that sometimes it's a quick fix and other times you search company websites, read long forums, and call help centers , which can be very frustrating. Are you patient enough to get through these times. Remember, design isn't just about music and sketchbooks. There are banal aspects.

3. You shouldn't become a graphic designer if you're not resourceful and good with technology. You must be able to solve problems in the creative and physical world. If you have trouble solving problems and learning new things, you may not be a good candidate for graphic design.

In my opinion, the best graphic designers are highly motivated.

4. You shouldn't become a graphic designer if you have a creative agenda you're trying to promote. If you think you have all the right creative answers and all your clients are wrong and /"They don't know what a good design style is…" then you are doomed to failure as a graphic designer. The reason being? You're there to help them bring their ideas to life, not yours.

If you have your own creative agenda, become an artist. It is completely acceptable to become an artist and to excel in your own art and creativity.
