Personal safety online is something we often take for granted. We tend to think that it is up to the services we use (email, banking services, social networks, etc.) to ensure our security. But there are common mistakes we make that can leave us vulnerable!

Here are six of the most common online personal safety mistakes people make…and how to avoid them.

1. Not balancing your bank account

This is something our parents' generation did religiously, but we don't seem to do it at all. While we don't need to itemize every purchase (although that's not a bad thing), you don't want to pay your credit card bill without first verifying each transaction. Did you authorize the purchase? Do you recognize him?

Otherwise, you'll want to do some research and, in some cases, even contact your bank to follow up. Believe it or not, banks make mistakes and I was able to get many of these charges waived.

2. Using lame or reused passwords

The biggest threat to our personal security online is our lame passwords. Either we write them down on a piece of paper or we reuse the same one on several accounts.

We need to learn either how to create better passwords or start using a password manager app.

3. Not using 2-factor authentication

If you're not using 2-factor authentication as part of your personal online security strategy, you should start now. Two-factor authentication is a way to verify your identity beyond just a password, in a way that makes it extremely difficult for hackers to impersonate you.

4. Not checking your free credit report

By law, you are allowed to get a free credit report once a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. This way you can monitor your credit and identity every 4 months if you wish.

5. Being careless about public WiFi

Public WiFi can be dangerous and is an easy way for hackers to prey on unsuspecting users. This is especially true for networks that are not password-secured. Don't use it! Or if you do, make sure you also use a virtual private network or VPN.

6. Trust (not be suspicious enough)

In general, we are too trusting of every place we put our information online. We give our bank card, our personal information and sometimes even our identity numbers! Learn to be skeptical (not paranoid!) to protect your identity and maintain good personal safety online.
