Drinking water is NOT the best way to stay hydrated

Roxana Ehsani is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Certified Sports Dietitian national media spokesperson and recipe developer. She has been quoted in hundreds of national media outlets including EatingWell U.S. News & World Report Runner's World Newsweek and many others.

There’s nothing better than taking that first big sip of water after a sweaty workout. After all water is the foundation of our bodies and we need a daily dose of it to stay hydrated and support nearly every system in our body. As a dietitian however it always amazes me how dehydrated many people seem to be. Most Americans don’t drink enough water each day which is hard to believe as someone who carries around a water bottle like it’s an appendage.

On the other hand drinking water all day long is also not something we should strive for. You can drink too much water especially around exercise which can lead to dangerous side effects if you overdo it. When we sweat during exercise we lose both water and electrolytes. Rehydrating after exercise with water helps cool the body supports the flow and transport of nutrients to the muscles and aids in muscle recovery. Additionally electrolytes are essential minerals that have multiple functions in the body and need to be replenished after exercise. When we consume electrolytes with water such as in an electrolyte-rich drink it helps our body retain fluid thus supporting rehydration better than water alone.
