Diet culture would have us believe that in order to lose weight we need to eliminate healthy foods entirely like those containing carbs gluten or dairy. But restrictive diets don’t work. You’re better off focusing on eating more foods that will help you lose weight. We spoke to two dietitians to get their recommendations for what to add to your shopping cart to do just that. These nine foods deliver filling fiber and protein while being lower in calories — a combination that makes it easy to lose weight without feeling deprived. “Increasing your vegetable intake is a great place to start if you’re trying to lose weight or get healthier” says Jessica Ball MS RD a registered dietitian and EatingWell’s Nutrition Editor. “Adding a salad to your meals is a delicious way to fill you up and add fiber and nutrients to your diet.” Leafy greens like spinach kale lettuce and cabbage provide fiber and water which means they keep you hydrated and help fill you up with very few calories. By keeping pre-washed lettuce or a bagged salad kit on hand you can easily whip up a leafy green salad when you’re in a pinch. Not a fan of salads? Throw leafy greens into a smoothie.
