How to Peel Potatoes Super Fast! – Life Hack

Here’s a hot (potato) tip: You don’t actually need a vegetable peeler to peel potatoes. If you have a lot of potatoes to peel and are short on time I’ve found a technique that will save you time and relieve wrist pain. While I wouldn’t call it a hack—that word gets thrown around a little too often these days—it’s a very clever approach to an otherwise tedious kitchen task. And I bet you already have everything you need to do it.

The trick comes from — where else? — social media. I first saw it on @thegoochpage a tips-and-tricks account run by a former Ringling Bros. circus clown (ah how I love the Internet).

Here’s how to do it according to the video instructions: First use a pair of kitchen shears to cut around the skin of each potato. Hold the potato vertically so that the cut is in the middle like a belt. Once you’ve made all the cuts place the potatoes in a pot of boiling water for a few seconds. You’re not trying to boil them so there’s no need to set a timer. In the video the potatoes aren’t even fully submerged in the water. Use tongs to remove the potatoes and place them in a bowl of ice water. This will stop the cooking process and cool the potatoes down enough to handle. Now for the fun part: pick up each potato and gently pull on the skin. It should slide right off.
