SHOOTING ON 120mm TELE LENS ON IPHONE 15 PRO MAX.
I've seen example after example of how effective action mode on the iPhone 15 Pro model is at stabilizing handheld video footage. Action mode was initially introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max smartphone models and works much like image stabilization in a video editor (warp stabilizer for Premiere Pro, tracking stabilizer for DaVinci Resolve, etc.) . It crops slightly then adjusts to the movements of the video footage. However, in my testing so far, the stabilization present in Action mode on the iPhone is significantly more effective and does not preset warping sequences like many video editing programs do.
Now, this feature may not entirely remove the need for a smartphone gimbal like the DJI Osmo Mobile, as using it makes your maximum resolution default to just 2.8K, which may be a deal breaker for some videographers on smartphone. However, since apps like Instagram only allow 1080p resolution uploads anyway, I don't think this is a deal breaker. Another downside for some iPhone video makers is that you won't be able to get as wide a range of lenses as possible, as the cropping that occurs certainly won't allow you to operate at as wide a focal length as you could. without using it.
However, for me the positives far outweigh the negatives, and especially if you have the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the 120mm 5x telephoto lens, if you want to shoot handheld you MUST use action mode , otherwise it will look horrible.
