One of the most important pieces of advice my grandmother gave me—aside from suggesting I become a writer an absurd idea I promptly ignored—was to always leave the house in the best possible condition. I realize this may sound a little old-fashioned and possibly even oppressive—I exist as more than a decorative object thank you very much—but I took it to heart anyway because I know she didn’t mean wearing high heels and rollers but rather that sometimes they can also be deceptive if you seem to enjoy them more than you actually feel.

I also apply it to the kitchen. So while if we’re being completely honest life right now is a swarm of prepping recipes for the next book (eee!) a to-do list for this month as long as the rest of this year kids waking up way too early mom going to bed too late an apartment that hasn’t cleaned itself and let’s not even get into what’s happening in the crisper — i.e. real life and not even a bad life — instead of dwelling on the chaos I think we should be cooking for the life we want not the life we have. So: I choose picnic bars.

Because if the opportunity arises to have a weekend picnic or do anything that involves blankets lawns hammocks iced tea or naps and laziness I’m all for it. Statistically speaking having picnic bars vastly increases the chances of you finding or creating a picnic to take with you. [Warning: Not verified by an actual statistician but I just know it works for us.]
