Summary

Whether you purchased your Steam Deck at launch or bought it used from someone else, you may want to know the health of your battery.

And luckily, Steam OS has a built-in feature that allows us to check this.
But to find out, we first need to restart the Steam Deck in desktop mode.

Now we want to look for the battery icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
Then just click on the icon and it will expand the Battery & Brightness panel.

This is where your Steam Deck will display the battery health status.
If it says 100%, or really anything above 70%, then your battery is not in bad shape at all.
I have even read that this percentage fluctuates quite often between approximately 90% and 100%.

However, if this percentage is 50% or less, you may want to consider investing in a Steam Deck battery replacement.
But even then, it might not be a big deal at all.

The Steam Deck supports passthrough loading.
So whenever the battery is at 90% or more and the Steam Deck is plugged into a suitable charger, it will then draw power from the outlet. . .not the battery.

So if you're not worried about battery life, you may not need to replace it at all.
As long as it is not damaged or swollen, the condition of the battery does not matter.
This simply means that your gaming sessions will be shorter when you're not connected to the charger.

This is a major selling point for many people. No one likes replacing the battery every year but the Steam Deck and its passthrough charging support allow you to continue gaming without worrying about the battery.

However, it's always a good idea to be aware of the battery status of your Steam Deck.
Since battery life estimates will be different for you than what you see online because your battery is at 50% capacity.
