Becoming a Top Chef: How Much Money Do Chefs Make?

Employment of chefs and head chefs has declined for two years in a row according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 128600 chefs and head chefs in the U.S. in 2018 a 4.3 percent decline from the peak two years ago.

Job losses were not evenly distributed geographically. New York (-1390) Texas (-1250) Michigan (-710) Tennessee (-640) and South Carolina (-500) suffered the largest year-over-year declines in jobs for chefs and head chefs.

In contrast Florida (+2380) California (+1070) Wisconsin (+400) and Connecticut (+400) have seen huge increases in the number of chefs and head chefs.
