Becoming a Top Chef: How Much Money Do Chefs Make?

Employment of chefs in America has soared to record highs in recent years according to the latest employment data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of chefs and head chefs in the U.S. was 131430 in 2017 a staggering 46 percent increase from 2011 when it hit a two-decade low. However the 2017 numbers reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics were 3000 shy of the record high reported a year earlier in 2016.

The strong job growth is not evenly distributed geographically. Compared to a decade ago 13 states saw very solid growth in chef ranks with increases of more than 50 percent. The states with the strongest employment growth for chefs and head chefs are:

On the other hand 15 states saw a decline with Oklahoma (-24%) Pennsylvania (-24%) Nebraska (-39%) and Idaho (-55%) being the most severe.
