I moved to San Francisco around the same time that Jim Harbaugh was coming to town to take over the 49ers. It would have been the perfect time to root for that team and wear the red and gold. I would have rooted for a fellow newcomer to town and while I think Harbaugh has a chip on his shoulder the size of Baltimore I can respect his drive and we-can-do-it attitude.
Yes I could have joined when the 49ers were underrated and my change of allegiance wouldn’t have been suspiciously blatant as a change of allegiance to winning. But I just wasn’t ready to call myself anything other than a New Yorker. And how was I supposed to know the 49ers would crush the NFC West? I mean I can throw more turnovers in one go than Alex Smith has all season. I’ve come to the conclusion that Frank Gore is pretty fun to watch if your idea of fun is 1211 rushing yards and 13 wins so far this season. It would have been a great parallel story to follow a personal Mighty Ducksian tale of two SF transplants who really knock it out of the park. I could cheer for my new city and feel like I had become a part of something big.
