Watercolor Palette-
If you're just starting out, I recommend getting A SET OF ARTIST GRADE 24 METAL HALF GLUES. Almost every major brand offers them and it's the perfect place to start. Do yourself a favor, get a great set (I show Da Vinci, a great option if you're US based but Daniel Smith, Sennelier, W&N, Lukas, Schmincke and others offer such sets) and paint paint ! If you want to expand your collection, purchase a select set or unique colors, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON OTHER BASIC SETS.
Paint brushes-
Unfortunately, there is no industry standard for the # on the brush. This means that one company's number 2 in a specific line would be as important as another's number 10. Read the actual size in mm or inches.
Start with medium sized flat and round brushes (like Escoda #10 in their Perla, Ultimo or Versatil line, or 3/4/" flat) and get a small brush for detail (somewhere around #2 in most sizes, but check measurements!).
