Caesar Salad with Toasted Panko | Doug Cooking

Serious Mealtimes / Amanda Suarez

Plain breadcrumbs are a pantry staple that I rely on when cooking: I brush them on pork or chicken breasts for extra crispiness top baked pasta with them for a satisfying crunch and toss them into meatloaf to keep it tender. My favorite way to use breadcrumbs is to season and toast them then use them to garnish simple salads and roasted vegetables. On a busy weeknight—when I'm trying to get dinner on the table quickly—seasoned breadcrumbs are often the easiest quickest way to add extra flavor and crunch to a meal.

Like croutons breadcrumbs are a delicious way to minimize food waste and extend the shelf life of your bread. But if you don’t feel like making your own breadcrumbs you can simply buy breadcrumbs from the grocery store and season them at home. (The recipe below works with either homemade or store-bought breadcrumbs.) Because breadcrumbs are so deliciously versatile the flavor possibilities are nearly endless: you can add fresh or dried herbs flavor them with spices or toss them with aromatic ingredients like garlic ginger or shallots.
