Imagine this: A delivery person hands you a brown paper bag. It seems heavy considering you only ordered two burgers but you don’t think much of it until a few minutes later when you rip it open you see four sandwiches inside. There might be a receipt stapled to the side of the bag. You check it and sure enough it doesn’t have your name or your order on it.

What to do when the order is wrong! (Tips for DoorDash / GrubHub / UberEATS delivery people)

If you’re lucky and the delivery person is still outside your door you can hopefully swap the incorrect delivery for the correct one (don’t be too hard on the delivery person; they’re often overworked and underpaid). That said it’s possible that your order was accidentally passed on to someone else before. Additionally delivery apps may have rules about whether delivery people can take back food that’s already been passed on: anecdotes from users of apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats suggest that restaurant meals can’t be returned though there can be gray areas if the food hasn’t been opened (there are obvious hygiene and safety concerns if a customer has received the wrong order already touched the food and tried to swap it). Depending on the app and perhaps the delivery person’s preferences you may even be able to contact the delivery person for a short window of time after delivery to try to resolve matters (though this can be tricky if you’re in a location where robots are delivering food instead of humans.

If you can’t quickly find a way to exchange orders through the delivery person you’ll likely have to go through the app’s customer service to figure it out. DoorDash GrubHub and Uber Eats all recommend going this route if you get the wrong order or something is missing. It’s helpful to include a photo of the receipt for the incorrect order bag and any items inside the bag.

You’ll usually find this option in the “help” or “support” section of the app or if you find your order in the app there may be an option to file a complaint directly from that page. You probably don’t want to contact the restaurant directly — if you received someone else’s order chances are the delivery person made the mistake and there’s not much the restaurant can do about it. (Even if they could remake the order they’d still need the app to send a delivery person to deliver it to you.) Chances are good that you’ll get a refund though there have been cases of people not getting it right away. You may want to be prepared to advocate for it.
