Warm Butter Rum – Food Wishes
I was fortunate enough to grow up with many wonderful holiday traditions such as searching for and chopping down the perfect Christmas tree sleigh rides singing midnight mass and of course the Feast of the Seven Fishes. But one thing I don’t remember being an annual ritual was enjoying fancy holiday drinks. We didn’t make eggnog hot toddies or mulled wine. We certainly didn’t make hot buttered rum. Unless of course the adults were participating in private (which is a possibility since cell phones hadn’t been invented yet and secrets were much easier to keep).
Aside from the occasional hot chocolate I can’t recall ever enjoying one of these iconic beverages. But as a wise man once said “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood” and that’s what I’m doing here thanks to my new best friend Hot Buttered Rum. Ah the memories. And no I’m not suggesting you give alcoholic beverages to children. You can make their drinks with a little rum extract in place of the actual liquor.
By the way the “batter” for this drink (the sweet and buttery base) keeps for a really long time in the fridge or freezer. That means you can enjoy this holiday drink all year long if you make a nice big batch now. Of course “can” and “should” are not the same thing — so as they say at the end of every drink commercial: drink responsibly.
