Perhaps the best part of my driving education my first summer of high school—aside from the priceless lessons I learned about road manners of course—was my instructor Wendell. Not only did he have the innate ability to grunt instructions without sounding angry he also loved donuts. A man after my own heart.

Wendell took a survey one day and we all agreed that we should take the light blue driving lesson van to Lamar's Donuts a town over and stuff ourselves with sugar fat and dairy before heading out for hours of driving lessons.

As a high school student my absolute favorite thing to get at a donut shop was a maple long john (or two) and a pitcher of full fat chocolate milk. Oh my goodness. I know the two worst things I could possibly choose for myself nutritionally. But I was 15 skinny and going to school in the SUMMER to learn to drive. GIVE ME A SHORT TIME.

The moral of the story: My love for maple long johns and super thick chocolate milk hasn’t gone away. What has changed is my body’s inability to process dairy. So while I can still enjoy the occasional donut the milk thing needs to change.
