One of my favorite things to do is sit down with a cookbook and devour every word like an irresistible novel. Lately I’ve been able to dig through not only my own growing collection but also the sauce- and batter-stained cookbooks from my parents’ and grandparents’ collections. I’ve found a lot of inspiration in these old books: retro gems and forgotten favorites just waiting to be rediscovered and repurposed.
When someone told me about a vintage and unconventionally titled recipe for Depression cake I was absolutely intrigued. By going through my cookbooks and searching old recipe sites I discovered a recipe that barely varied between sources all without butter eggs or milk.
