Chrome OS gives you a desktop with familiar elements on the bottom edge. The Launcher button in the lower left corner will immediately remind Windows users of the Start button.
Similar to the Chromebook pin on the taskbar, Chrome OS has an app shelf where you can dock icons of your favorite apps. And there is a small area at the bottom right that acts like the Windows system tray where you can access settings as well as battery and network information.
The App Shelf saves you from having to click or tap the Launcher button first before clicking or tapping the app you want to open. By pinning apps to the shelf, they are just a click or tap away.
Ways to Pin an App or Website Chromebook to a Shelf
Launcher app on Chromebook
When you look at the app grid in the app launcher, you can right-click any app and choose Pin to Shelf.
From the Chromebook apps shelf itself
For apps set to open in their own window (as opposed to a tab in Chrome), their icon appears in the shelf when they're open. If you want to make an app's icon a permanent member of the shelf, while the app is open and its icon is in the shelf, right-click its icon and choose Pin.
From Chrome
For an app that doesn't open in its own window but as a tab in Chrome, you can always add its icon to the shelf. Make sure its tab is active in Chrome, then click the three-dot button in the upper right corner of Chrome, click More Tools, then click Add to Shelf. You can also use this method to pin a website to the shelf.
Finally, if you want to remove an app from the shelf, right-click its icon and choose Remove Pin or click on an app and drag it from the shelf. You can also drag and drop icons onto the shelf to rearrange them.
