Coffee jelly is a dessert made from black coffee and gelatin. Once common in British and American cookbooks it became popular in Japan in the 1960s after a Japanese chain of coffee shops first made the concoction. It is called kohii zerii in Japanese and can now be found in most restaurants and convenience stores throughout the country.

Coffee Jelly Recipe from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K | COOKING FOR WEEBS

The Fir Eats / Cara Cormack

Coffee jelly is very easy to make: Sweeten strong coffee while heating it then add a mixture of gelatin powder and water and let it set in the refrigerator. This recipe creates coffee jelly that is light and not too sweet although you can adjust the sweetness to your taste. It is perfect as a dessert especially after a Japanese dinner instead of or alongside a cup of coffee. It is known as a refreshing Japanese summer treat but you can enjoy it all year round.

"Easy to make and quite tasty this coffee jelly recipe is fun. You really want strong brewed coffee as the flavour is much lighter than you might expect and I would probably sweeten it a bit. Served in a glass vase it makes a fantastic end to a dinner party." —Colleen Graham
