Even if you have a different AirPod from the same generation, they connect easily. Simply reset the AirPod case by holding the back button for at least 15 seconds until the white light flashes amber orange. Then you can start pairing your different AirPods of the same generation.
This technique of using mismatched AirPods together eliminates unnecessary waste and can save you a LOT of money.
