Coming from different countries my husband and I have an international group of friends and a steady stream of visitors from all over the world. When a British-American couple visited us recently we got into a lovely conversation comparing our school days in the US the UK and the Netherlands – whether we packed lunches or ate at school what school meals were like… that sort of thing.
Growing up in the UK our friend Ravi’s most memorable lunchtime treat was a cornflake tart. Ravi’s American wife my Dutch husband and I had never heard of them and couldn’t imagine what a cornflake tart would look like. Imagine a jam tart with a layer of chewy crunchy cornflakes covered in golden syrup – what’s not to love?
