Costco certainly has a large selection of reasonably priced wine but it also has several sets with shockingly expensive bottles. At just under $49000 the most expensive of these bottles listed online is a set of Château Haut-Brion a historic French Bordeaux that includes a bottle for each year from 1970 to 2017. This collection and others like it are listed as “Pre-Sale” on Costco’s website so you’ll likely have to contact a manager if you’re interested in purchasing one. In the meantime you might also consider shopping around at other Costco locations to save some money.

The Haut-Brion may be Costco's most expensive wine set but when you crunch the numbers you'll realize it comes out to just over $1000 per bottle. Believe it or not this is a steal compared to other wine sets. For example a Château Petrus collection costs just $34999 but with just six decanters totaling nearly $6000 each it's technically the most expensive set by bottle. It's safe to say that Costco employees will be double-checking your receipt if you walk out with one of these sets. Costco's website states that Château Petrus can be kept for decades so perhaps the biggest draw to these sets is their investment value.

If you don’t feel like coughing up your retirement fund in favor of a few bottles of wine the big-box retailer has a few more affordable collections in the $1000 to $5000 range. These sets also include a wider variety of vintages vineyards and styles. Unfortunately some of the perks are only available in California while Costco is expanding and rolling out major changes in 2024. But when you’re already spending tens of thousands of dollars on wine an extra plane ticket shouldn’t be too much of a deal-breaker between you and these lavish collections.
