Dave's Killer Bread: Overrated or Worth the Hype? Honest Review

For special dinners I often find myself heading to the bread aisle only to be met with an inevitable realization: not only did I no longer have the time or motivation to make some of the best homemade rolls but the bread selection had little to no options for whole wheat and whole grain rolls. Maybe it’s the way they activate your taste buds or just the influence of Texas Roadhouse’s infamous bread baskets but rolls truly make the Southern dinner table round. As a Georgia guy who wants to prioritize protein and fiber I’ve always struggled with how hard it is to find whole wheat and whole grain rolls at the grocery store…until now.

Dave’s Killer Bread (DKB) a company known for its organic bread products just released their newest Rock ‘N’ Rolls. The 12-pack of whole wheat rolls uses their signature blend of 21 grains and seeds and features exactly the first ingredient I was looking for: whole wheat flour. It was an exciting day when I found out the product was on its way to stores and an even more exciting moment when I got to try them myself.

Many rolls emphasize a glossy egg-washed surface. In contrast the outer texture of DKBs takes on a more delicate crumb that you get with rustic sandwich bread. The tops are also studded with many of the whole grains and seeds used in the bread including oats sunflower seeds sesame seeds and flax seeds. These combined with the wheat flour blend used in the dough give the rolls a nutty tangy flavor. I find them to be very sourdough-like with a soft texture reminiscent of other popular rolls.
