Apple's new feature is called "Crash Detection." Until further notice, it will only work on newer devices. Here is an official list of products that can be used.

iPhone 14 series devices
Apple Watch Series 8
Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
Ultra-Apple Watch
For crash detection to work properly, these devices must be running the most recent version of their software.

How does Apple crash detection work?
Apple devices use different sensors, parts and data to determine if there has been a serious crash. These include microphone, gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS and barometer. When the time comes, Apple's motion algorithms will work together to enable crash detection.
