This video explains how I created a DIY smart window air conditioner by connecting my AC unit to an Ecobee3 WiFi thermostat (HomeKit and Amazon Alexa compatible).
This IoT solution helped centralize the air conditioning in my home and essentially created an Ecobee air conditioning system.

The window AC unit plugs into the GE Z-Wave smart outlet.
An IoT automation scene, via the VeraLite Smart Hub, turns the smart plug on and off based on the state of the Ecobee3 WiFi thermostat (Cool vs. Idle).
The Ecobee3 WiFi Thermostat is compatible with IoT platforms like Apple HomeKit and Amazon Echo, so I can use my voice with Siri or Amazon Alexa to adjust the WiFi thermostat and trigger the Window AC home automation scene.
