Microsoft will begin rolling out Windows 11 22H2 to eligible PCs in the coming weeks and months, but we've compiled a handy guide to get you up and running with the update now. In a recent article, Windows Latest put into practice many of the new features coming with the 23H2 update.

Windows 11 has changed a lot since the version we reviewed was released in October, with Microsoft rolling out a steady stream of revamped app updates, bug fixes, and user experience improvements. This week, leaks indicate that Microsoft is finishing work on what will ultimately ship in the form of Windows 11 build 22H2, the first annual update for the operating system. Windows 11 has been available for almost a year now, with the first major Windows 11 update releasing over the next few weeks. Various features coming to Windows 11 have always been rumored, but it's unclear which features will arrive in 22H2.

Although the initial version of Windows 11 will remain supported for at least another year, upgrading to newer feature updates will extend that support cycle, and even if you don't update now you will eventually have to do this. In other words, Windows 11 will get a major feature update every year. Unlike the initial Windows 11 launch, there likely won't be a way to ensure that all compatible devices receive the final version immediately. That is, supported hardware will still see Windows 11, version 22H2, ready, the problem is that the update is also offered to unsupported hardware.

The new bug effectively allows users using unsupported hardware to update directly to Windows 11 version 22H2, which isn't even released yet. Microsoft even accidentally released version 22H2 for Windows 10 users with unsupported hardware, but it's not worth downloading. Recent reports from Reddit, however, suggest that users using incompatible hardware are also being offered the update, including Windows 10 users. The release is not as large as some versions, reflecting the upgrade mechanics of Windows 11, but it smoothes out some rough edges.

What Microsoft has indicated, and it's a good point, is that the Windows 10 upgrade from 22H1 to 22H2 will be an activation pack – use small pieces of code to activate new features. Since there aren't many changes in Windows 10 22H2, this should be an easy upgrade for those of us who look forward to the nice, quiet, and painless feature deployment process. This more lenient schedule also means that this review won't cover all of the Windows features that will be part of Windows 11 version 22H2 when it arrives. It's possible that apps like the new sound recorder, which is currently previewed on the Developer Channel, could fall into the hands of the public before the official release of the 22H2 update.

As most of us know by now, there is no Release Preview channel for Windows 10, which receives cumulative updates before the consumer release of Windows 10. Although build 22621) is labeled Release Preview , this is the final version of a software update that Microsoft will offer in waves to the general public. Windows 11, version 22H2, will form the basis of Windows updates over the next year. If you want to try Windows 11 22H2 right away, you can sign up for the beta channel and update your system to the latest preview builds.
