Doctor Explains ROSACEA Skin Condition – Causes, Treatment and More!
In this educational video, Dr. O'Donovan explains the key things you need to know about rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, pimples, swelling and dilated blood vessels.

Learn about triggers that can make rosacea worse, such as certain foods, drinks, weather conditions and stress.

Explore effective treatments, including topical and oral medications, laser therapy, and lifestyle adjustments.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

Rosacea can cause a rash and redness that can make you feel self-conscious, lower your self-esteem, and even lead to anxiety or depression. The affected skin may feel very hot or sting. Some people with rosacea may also have eye problems, such as inflammation in the front part of the eye, which can cause blurred vision. If you have symptoms affecting your eyes, it is important to consult a dermatologist or optician.

What does rosacea look like?
Rosacea often begins with a tendency to blush easily. Over time, central areas of the face may take on a darker shade of red with small, dilated blood vessels, bumps, and pus-filled spots. In some cases, the skin on the face may swell, especially around the eyes. Men may have an overgrowth of oil-producing glands on the nose, causing it to become enlarged and red, a condition called rhinophyma.

What are the treatment options?
1. Topical Treatments: You can apply medications to the affected areas to control inflammation. It may take at least 8 weeks to see the effects. Certain treatments specifically target redness linked to rosacea.
2. Oral antibiotics: For moderate to severe rosacea, antibiotics can help fight inflammation. Common antibiotics include tetracycline, doxycycline, and erythromycin.

Self-care tips

Here are some steps you can take to manage rosacea:
• Sun protection: Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day.
• Gentle cleansing: Avoid scrubbing or scrubbing your face and use a mild soap substitute.
• Moisturizer: Use an unscented moisturizer if your skin is dry or sensitive.
• Avoid triggers: Keep a journal of what makes your rosacea worse and try to avoid these triggers.
• Cosmetics: You can use makeup to cover rosacea. Camouflaging the skin can help hide excessive redness.
• Avoid irritants: Avoid using acne treatments and corticosteroid creams unless recommended by your dermatologist.
• Eye care: If your eyes are affected, consult a general practitioner, dermatologist or ophthalmologist.
• Medication review: Some medications may make blushing worse. Your doctor may adjust your treatment accordingly.
