Aldi vs. Trader Joe's | Which Items Are BETTER at Aldi?

You may have heard the myth that Aldi owns Trader Joe's. While Aldi and Trader Joe's appear to have a shared history this isn't entirely true.

Today Aldi's primary logo can be seen throughout the U.S. However the chain began in Germany by brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht in 1961. The name Aldi is a shortened form of the family name combined with the German word for discount "Diskont." It wasn't until 1976 that Aldi stores began appearing in the states with the first location in Iowa.

Like Aldi Trader Joe's started in the '60s. Joe Coulombe (yes there really is a Joe behind the brand) was running convenience stores in Los Angeles when he had the idea in 1967 to launch a chain of stores inspired in part by a local tiki bar in California. The first location looked like a convenience store that sold groceries housewares and photography.
