Currently, a dedicated satellite communicator like inReach has many advantages.
The iPhone is an “oh shit” button. Basically a PLB that you always have with you.
There are myriad scenarios in which communication is helpful, but does not merit full emergency response. The InReach is a specially designed, rugged device that you can carry with you and keep you and anyone who may be with you or in distress visible and accessible. The iPhone is not designed for this and is just as likely to be damaged in the incident as you are.
HOWEVER, redundancy is not a bad thing. It never hurts to have multiple ways to communicate in an emergency, especially when they're on different networks. So there are advantages to having both.
Regardless, for now, the benefits of a dedicated satellite communicator are hard to ignore. If you're a hobbyist and don't get out much, then maybe the cost of an inReach (device plus service) is hard to justify and the "oh shit" functionality of the iPhone is enough…but if If you regularly venture out without cell phone service, the satellite communicator remains the most valuable security tool in your kit.
