You might think that a cucumber is just a cucumber right? But in reality there are nearly 100 varieties of cucumbers grown worldwide most of which are unnoticed by the average consumer. Cucumbers are actually members of the gourd family and grow on creeping vines. Originally native to South Asia they are now grown in most parts of the world.
The most common varieties that you can find in most markets are the English cucumbers pickling cucumbers and the common slicing cucumber that we use most often in our dishes.
