The tri-mesh import is coming to the platform and today I want to share with you the tools the Metacrafters team is using to prepare and make the transition. And… what smart AI tools we use to speed up and improve our workflow.

I’m going to talk about 2 essential PC tools – these work on Mac and PC. Next, I will talk about 2 essential tablet tools. And then I will talk about tools that allow you to create trimesh models with ZERO modeling skills. Yes, I am of course talking about generative AI.

What is trimesh import? This is the ability to import any 3D object you would design onto your PC or tablet or even a phone. This frees us from the constraints of using the somewhat limited horizon tools. If you've built anything in Horizon, you know that using primitives isn't ideal. It's good for the low poly cartoon aesthetic and some of Horizon's worlds and games look really nice but… well… we want more choice when it comes to building style. We want cleaner shapes and…and this is very important…we want to be able to import our own textures.

Importing Trimesh isn't just about 3D models. It's also about designing complex textures or… being able to introduce photos, posters, paintings or even replicas of real-world objects into Horizon. Once tri-mesh import is available, there are no limits.

There's no official release date yet, but Horizon and some users have already tested this feature, so I suspect it's only a matter of months, if not weeks. If you are watching this video months after it was uploaded, please check the video description. Once Trimesh is available to everyone, I'll be sure to link to a video tutorial with step-by-step instructions.

Let's start with 3D modeling on PC. Let's start with Blender.

1 – Characteristics. This is the most important point. For everything I've ever needed to do in 3D, Blender has done the job. I never feel like I'm missing an important feature or tool that might be holding me back. And in fact, the 3D community has been somewhat frustrated with the pace of development of applications like Max or Maya, and almost everyone agrees that Blender has improved very quickly over the past few years. And speaking of features, I like that sculpting tools are included in Blender. I can use traditional modeling tools and switch to sculpting tools at any time. Without leaving the application.

2 – Cost. The blender is free. I think Cinema 4D costs over 100/month these days. Maya and Max have around 200 per month. Unless you work with other people or studios who ask you to share Cinema 4D files with them, I don't see a good reason to spend that much money.

3 – Support. You'll find a ton of Blender tutorials on YouTube. A 3D application is something you never really finish learning. As you go, you will find yourself learning new tools or techniques or learning new, updated versions of tools. Blender has been around for a while and a quick search on YouTube will produce thousands of tutorials that you can watch for free. The blender is popular. Blender is open source. Blender has a ton of add-ons that people create, whether free or quite affordable.

4 – Sustainability. We all know that AI is rapidly changing the way we create. Due to its large and active user base, Blender is best positioned to take advantage of the upcoming generative AI tools coming to market. Blender allows users to create and distribute add-ons that can be used directly within the application. For example, there are already tools that allow you to use Google Maps and extract their 3D models for your own use. This is done without even leaving Blender, by simply typing in the coordinates of the global location you want to use. I imagine that soon we will have several add-on choices in Blender that will allow us to describe the 3 models or characters we want to create.
