How to Make French's Crispy Fried Onions | Unpacked | Food Network

In the week or two leading up to Thanksgiving we’re willing to bet that most American households have at least one can of French-fried onions on hand. You know those crispy breaded onion rings that are the ultimate garnish for a green bean casserole (and a secret snack for the cook once you’re done making them)?

As ubiquitous as they are during the holidays we rarely stop to think about the history of some pantry staples like this one. To learn the fascinating history of fried onions we spoke with Kevan Vetter executive chef and director of culinary development for McCormick Global in Hunt Valley Md. McCormick now owns French's — yes the French's emblazoned on a red flag that adorns every can of one of the country's best-selling onion toppings.

"To our knowledge Olney & Carpenter were the first large-scale manufacturers of canned French Fried Onions sometime in the 1930s" Vetter explained. "There were several acquisitions over the years with French's acquiring it in the 1980s. French Fried Onions became known as French's Crispy Fried Onions in 1986. By acquisition French's joined the McCormick & Co. family of brands in 2017."
