It is a prequel series set approximately 200 years before Game of Thrones. This shows us how the Targaryen dynasty went from this invincible ruling class to this,

So if you haven't read the books or even seen the original series, that's okay! This is a new series, and we're here to explain a few key moments that make Westeros, Westeros, and those fiery Targaryens their powerful, weird, crazy selves – all in the hopes of catching you up before the premiere of the 21st of August.

Before we dive in, let's state the obvious. Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are based on novels written by George RR Martin (respectfully slow writer).

Game of Thrones is based on a half-written book series called A Song of Ice and Fire, and The House of the Dragon is based on his previous novel Fire and Blood, which tells us the detailed history of the famous Targaryen family.

What some viewers may not know is that before the events of the first season of Game of Thrones, nearly 13,000 years of history were only described to audiences through the dialogues of characters from the original series. The White Walkers, the Children, the Wall, the dragons, and magic are all part of the long and complicated timeline of Westeros.

We need to establish that in this world, geographically, two massive islands are separated by a narrow sea. The island to the east is called Essos; a land of men, horses and the thriving capital of Valyria – which we'll talk more about in a minute.

The island west of Essos has been nicknamed, you guessed it, Westeros.

At the beginning of time, before men set foot on Westerosian lands, the only creatures in existence were known as the Children of the Forest. Luckily, we've already had the pleasure of meeting these sassy and dedicated wood elves.

Around 12,000 years ago, children lived in the forests and villages of northern Westeros. They possessed great magic and lived in harmony to please their nameless, faceless gods. For the children, their religion was their sumptuous wooded surroundings.

These fearsome faces carved into the towering white trees of northern Weirwood were carved by the Children to reflect the gods they served. These faces represent the gods watching over all who pass through the woods, rivers and mountains of the north.

While the children were minding their own business and living their best lives, along came the first men. Literally, these were the first humans ever recorded in the history of Westeros. Coming from Essos, the first men were quick to attempt to reclaim the forests and lands from the children by hacking, burning, and conquering the forests of the north.

But the Children put up a massive fight and after centuries of fighting and death, the two sides decided to enter into a truce and formed what was known as the "Pact". This pact implied that the first men could dominate all the lands, coasts, mountains and seas of the south, but that the north, their gods and its magic would forever belong to the Children. And for a time, peace reigned.

Until about 8,000 years ago, when the first men were in the Age of Heroes, expanding Westeros into a sprawling kingdom, the Children lost control of a fearsome race of ice warriors and zombies known as the name of The White-Walkers.

These beings desire only death and disorder and have even brought about the period called The Long Night. Which you may remember as Bran's favorite bedtime story. [CLIP]

Then the first men and children of the forest united, driving the White Walkers back into the frozen depths of the north.

Oh, not only did they build a wall, my friend. They built THE wall. A massive 300-mile wall of ice intended to prevent anything from entering the southern realms of Westeros.
