4th of July Fireworks Hot Dogs Recipe! | How to Make 4th of July Hot Dogs
Serious Mealtimes / Amanda Suarez
Recipes for firework hot dogs (also called rocket dogs) started popping up on the Internet around 2011. (One of the first to appear appears to be from the now-defunct Family Fun Magazine as a recipe for "rocket dogs" circa 2011.) These social media darlings — hot dogs wrapped in dough and fried until golden brown to resemble little fireworks — are a fun concept for a Fourth of July barbecue or other summer party. But I'll let you in on a secret: While they may look cute they usually don't taste all that great. I set out to change that — and as the recipe below shows I succeeded.
Skip the canned dough and make a quick cookie dough instead. Most firecracker hot dog recipes rely on pre-made doughs for convenience. Typically they call for canned refrigerated cookie dough or croissant dough and a handful of recipes call for pre-made pie crust or breadstick dough. I don’t know if you’ve tried a canned cookie lately but their appeal pretty much begins and ends with opening the can. While it’s an understandable shortcut for a quick and easy dish like this I knew that a cookie dough would be a step up in buttery flavor and flakiness from start to finish and would still be easy to make with just one bowl and a handful of pantry ingredients.
