My parents are grocers so time away from school or sports meant doing chores at their store. My routine included haggling for a treat after reaching the end of my to-do list and often grabbing flan from the dairy pantry.
In Paraguay where we lived flan is sold ready-made next to the yogurt. It is also packaged like yogurt with the caramel on the bottom and the wobbly custard on top. I could eat half a dozen at a time if my mother would let me.
