New York City is a terrible place to be in the summer. While some waterfront cities enjoy cool ocean breezes all day long we rely more on the hot exhalations of garbage trucks. Offices are set to about the same temperature as an Arctic ice cap but subway platforms are so unbelievably sweltering that on my first day in NYC 14 years ago—cute as the little New Yorker I was—I uttered the words “Is this even legal?” It’s a rare day when you’re not walking on the sidewalk and have a window air conditioner dripping you-don’t-want-to-know-about water on your head. Flip-flops might cool your feet outdoors but you may never recover from seeing the new color of your toes by the end of the day and it always seems like everyone except me is having a Summer Friday. The city is really trying to make things more livable: the 14 beaches are free there are dozens and dozens of free public pools something like a gazillion sprinkler parks and you know all those endless photos of kids frolicking in sprinkler fire hydrants? Hardly a symbol of urban decay it’s even legal and encouraged. But the fact is that come July 4th (and possibly earlier this year) anyone with the means to be anywhere else is and the rest of us plebs are schvitzin’ it up on the sidewalk.

Spiked Coconut Limeade BlendJet Recipe

And this summer we're going to do it big. We're going to embrace the heat. We're going to pretend we're somewhere tropical and glamorous. Our summer home is waiting for… uh in the blender.

My editor went to Colombia in March and came back raving about the BEST DRINK EVER (all caps even from an editor so you know it was a major) limonada de coco which is basically coconut milk lime juice sugar and ice mashed up into what I would probably call coconut-lime-lime slush but in Spanish it sounds a lot more glamorous than most things. And yes you can put rum in it. But we didn’t. My son decided yesterday an hour into the 90 degree heat that he’d had enough of the heat and an Ace bandage on his sprained ankle and nope he couldn’t stop screaming. I hear you kid I really do. So we decided that only a South American brain freeze would make things better and look I don’t want to overstate it I won’t but you have to believe me when I tell you: this drink fixes everything. It makes the most inclement weather bearable and makes you feel like you're on vacation even when you're not. Plus you'll wish sandal season was longer so you could wear one every day.
