Furikake Chex Mix Recipe: Hawaii's Festive Treat

The fir eats / Bahareh Niati

I’ve always been a fan of classic Chex Mix. The massive amounts of homemade extra-Worcestershire Chex Mix I made for my roommates earned me my college nickname “Chex Girl.” I’ve been making this crunchy snack on the regular ever since. So imagine my delight when I tried a new-to-me sweet-and-salty twist on the grain-based snack while visiting Hawaii!

The Hawaiian version of Chex mix starts off in the familiar way with rice Chex corn Chex and pretzels with a variation of extra grains like Honeycomb cereal but that’s where the similarities end. This addictive mix takes a Pacific twist with the addition of furikake the Japanese seasoning mix made from tiny flakes of nori seaweed and sesame seeds. It adds an umami punch to many Hawaiian dishes like poke rice bowls musubi… and Chex mix too!
