An English muffin is a small round yeast bread that is usually sliced in half horizontally and toasted. The first recipe resembling these toasted treats is said to have been in a British cookbook from 1758. At the time they were simply called "muffins" and were sold door to door in England.

When Samuel Bath Thomas moved from England to New York City he opened a bakery and began making his mother's muffin recipe. In 1894 he filed a trademark claiming to be the first to use the term "English muffin." English muffins are now a favorite breakfast food in many places around the world including North America Australia and New Zealand. In Germany they are known as Toastbrötchen and a similar dish called bolo de caco is served in Portugal.
