video description

While smartphone and tablet manufacturers slow down their monthly OTA security updates every few years, Google continues to push a new monthly update to all eligible devices. This set of changes is known as a Google Play System Update and tends to include new features as well as a set of bug fixes and performance improvements for Android.

Google recently announced the new update for July 2023 and with it they focused on Android Wear, the Google Play Store, general bug fixes and stability improvements.

For this month, the update adds new developer features for Google and third-party app developers that allow them to support processes related to device connectivity with their app. This change is aimed at those who own an Android Wear smartwatch, so look forward to app updates with these changes in the near future.

This update will also allow us to see new events, updates, offers and content available in an Android app or game while you browse the Google Play Store. So look for these new reviews while you are in the Play Store app.

Generic improvements have also been made to platform stability, for Android Auto, PCs, smartphones, smart TVs and smartwatches. This update also includes some bug fixes for services related to system management and diagnostics for these same platforms.

I also read that Google Wallet will have the ability to endquote /"share your valuables/" with others. I haven't seen an announcement yet on what this entails, so we should hear something from Google about it in the coming weeks.

For these changes to be installed, the Google Play Services app must be updated to version 23.26.
And the Google Play Store will need to be updated to version 36.5.

These are usually installed automatically in the background without the user needing to install them manually. But you can download these new updates if you want.

However, to benefit from these new changes, we also need to manually install the Google Play system update on your smartphone or tablet. This is not done through the built-in updater for OTA security updates, as you may be used to.

Instead, we have to navigate through the Settings app to find the About Phone location.
Depending on what phone you have, the menu items will look a little different than what I can show you here.
So the easiest way I can suggest is to open the Settings app and then look for Google Play System Update.

This will at least give you one result that you can tap to go straight to the Required Settings menu.
From there, simply tap Google Play System Update so your device can check if an update is available.

If so, the update will be downloaded and installed automatically.
The installation process will be rather quick and you will then be asked to restart the device to complete the installation.

Keep in mind that these Google Play system updates are released monthly and are not part of the typical OTA security updates you are used to. They must therefore be installed separately.

Google also has a habit of slowly rolling out updates to Android devices. So, even if you are not eligible to install the update at the moment, it is recommended to check again tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
