Charcoal lumps vs. charcoal briquettes

In the world of charcoal grilling there is no more fundamental and hotly debated topic than lump charcoal vs. briquettes. Since they are the building block for everything you grill it’s no wonder grill masters around the world defend their choice with extreme passion. So you might be wondering “Who is the reigning champion?” Well there really is no easy answer but there are a few essential charcoal things you need to know to make the right choice.

Charcoal is made by burning wood without oxygen and lump coal is the product of that. Since lump coal is charcoal in its most natural form it’s no wonder that purists almost always prefer it. In addition lump coal has many attractive properties; it ignites faster burns hotter and leaves very little ash behind compared to briquettes. Lumps are also more responsive to oxygen making it easier to control the temperature of the fire if your grill has adjustable air vents.

Pros: Lamps burn hotter quickly produce little ash easy to adjust temperature all natural. Cons: Burns faster is more expensive and is less consistent (bags may contain unusable small pieces of charcoal).
