It's been a year since my last iCloud Keychain vs 1Password review video, and Keychain is still prone to exploits… but let's not be so negative and give iCloud Keychain a good chance to compare itself once again to one of the best password managers like 1Password. So, is Keychain safe, or should Mac users choose another one?

iCloud Keychain vs 1Password – Security!

Naturally, security should be your first concern in this password manager comparison: there's no point storing your passwords insecurely, right? 1Password and iCloud Password Manager use 256-bit AES. For most of you, this combination of numbers and letters means very little – so just know that it's an encryption algorithm used by most major password managers.

These providers also have a Zero Knowledge architecture, meaning only you can see the actual content of your passwords. And surprisingly, Apple Password Manager and 1Password offer a bug bounty program where any user can report an issue and, of course, get a reward. It's still one of the best ways to protect your software from bugs: paying regular users to break it. So for the most part these two managers are similar.

iCloud Keychain vs 1Password – Violations and audits!

ℹ️ However, 1Password has never been hacked or exploited, which is a big deal when we're talking about tools created specifically to protect your data. And I'm not even talking about that old iCloud Keychain exploit. No, just this year the threat actors were "promoting" a tool capable of stealing iOS information, including keychain passwords…

i️ But wait, in this iCloud Keychain vs 1Password comparison, there's more: 1Password has been audited many times. Audits are tests carried out by third parties to verify the veracity of the claims made by different suppliers. 1Password has an entire webpage dedicated to audits – impressive. Now, iCloud Keychain audits? Oh… none… So sure, 1Password is a premium tool, but keychain security is different like night and day.

1Password – Safes and travel mode!

ℹ️ Vaults play a big role in the appeal of 1Passwords. These allow you to quickly organize different passwords or sensitive data into "vaults/". This tool isn't just for visual cleanliness – it lets you create special vaults for sharing, like streaming server passwords, work-related content, or any other banking information you want share with your wife. With iCloud Keychain, I can broadcast individual passwords with other Apple users, but sharing multiple credentials becomes a pain. I really liked the 1Password vault system.

ℹ️ However, it's not over since the unique feature of 1Passwords, I haven't seen any other password manager have it, is Travel Mode. It allows you to set up certain safes which would be locked and unusable when you leave. This way, sensitive data can only be accessed at home. It may not be very useful for regular users, but it is a worthwhile investment for businesses.

1Password vs iCloud Keychain – Prices!

We've reached the part of this iCloud Keychain vs 1Password review where most of you will fall into two camps – Good enough for a free camp since Keychain is free with all Apple products – or – Security is worth a few dollars with 1Password premium plans. If you don't have the budget available, the iCloud keychain approach will do just fine. Just try to learn a little more about what he does and how he does certain things. But if you can save a few dollars since the Individual plan currently costs $3 per month, I highly recommend upgrading to 1Password.

The conclusion

Look, iCloud Keychain isn't a terrible solution for storing passwords, it works for basic use, but it's definitely not the best password manager either – it's very lackluster compared to to dedicated managers like 1Password. It's a premium tool, but in my opinion its features are worth it.
