As the pandemic persisted, many found themselves spending much more time in front of digital devices, putting more strain on the eyes than ever before. Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, is a group of eye and vision problems resulting from prolonged use of computers, tablets, cell phones or other mobile devices. Most symptoms of digital eye strain are temporary and will stop when you no longer look at a screen. Ana Bonaldi, OD, optometrist at UMass Memorial Eye Center, explains how to reduce digital eye strain. She emphasizes the importance of taking adequate breaks. This includes using the 20-20-20 rule where it is recommended to take a 20-second break from a screen to see something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. She also discusses the need for regular eye exams to ensure eyeglass prescriptions are up to date.
