Hickory syrup
Serious Mealtimes / Tama Matsuoka Wong
Last month we picked lots of hickory nuts and now that the leaves have fallen the trees stand like silent wooden sentinels in a silver-gray forest.
I’ve put away the remaining shells and uncracked nuts and now it’s time to gather some hickory bark. I peel off the bits that hang from the sides of the tree like brittle old wooden shingles.
