This almond milk is so creamy and flavorful you’ll want to drink it right away. Store-bought almond milk is convenient but homemade almond milk is relatively easy to make and less expensive. Plus making your own almond milk at home gives you control over the sweeteners and other additions. Aside from the naturally sweet dates this recipe is unsweetened. Add a little honey maple or agave syrup for sweetness if desired.

So why on earth would you make your own? If you’re a fan it turns out there are plenty of good reasons—and it’s easier than you think. Read on to find out why you should give almond milk a try why making it yourself can be beneficial and how to make it at home.

If you’re vegan or lactose intolerant almond milk is a great alternative to skim milk. But if you’re neither of the above it still offers plenty of benefits. It’s relatively low in calories (around 30 calories per cup depending on the brand for unsweetened milk vs. 80 calories for 1 cup of skim milk) and virtually no sugar (again unsweetened milk) and has almost no carbs. If you’re looking for protein almond milk isn’t terrible (it has about 1 gram per cup) but if you’re using it in smoothies you can give it a boost by adding nuts lentils or protein powder. Nutritional benefits aside its mild nutty flavor is never overpowering and it’s a great starting point for those new to dairy-free beverages.
