How to make Advocaat – The homemade Dutch party liqueur (alternative to Advocaat)

When I was a kid my Dutch relatives would bring my family all the treats that were hard to find here in the States. My favorite was hagelslag a kind of candy sprinkles you spread on sandwiches. (Boxes of hagelslag guaranteed that I would get to eat candy for breakfast.) The adults however were all about an ochre-colored liqueur called advocaat. It tasted like a milkshake with avocado and mustard so when they poured themselves a tall glass for Christmas I was never tempted to sneak a sip. After all these were the same adults who raved about salty black licorice which I was certain was the worst thing I had ever tasted.

When I was an adult my uncle convinced me to try advocaat. He assured me that there was no mustard or avocado involved. I was prepared for something strange especially since the consistency is more like pudding than liqueur. But I was pleasantly surprised. Advocaat tastes like a creamy brandy custard. Although it’s often called “Dutch advocaat” advocaat uses only egg yolks giving it a deeper richer flavor than you’re probably used to. While it’s certainly not a low-calorie drink it doesn’t seem to be as heavy on the tongue as holiday drinks made with milk and cream. So my family was right about advocaat and for the past few years I’ve mixed a few every Christmas. (Side note: I’m still convinced they’re wrong about salty black licorice.)

I have never seen eggnog in a US liquor store but I have heard that some stores sell Bols or Warninks. I have also seen Herman Jansen and Cooymans online. There are other brands throughout the Netherlands Belgium and Germany but they do not seem to be imported in large quantities. If you can find a bottled brand in a liquor store it usually costs around $20 but if you order it outside the US that price seems to double. Waiting for a Dutch relative to visit me still seems to be the easiest way to get a bottle of eggnog without paying top dollar.
