Make way Heinz! I have made the BEST KETCHUP EVER!!!
Heinz has really spoiled me. When Erin asked if I was interested in starting my “Sauced” column I started to agonize over which condiment to tackle first. I couldn’t think of anything that would be more fitting for the ubiquity of ketchup. You rarely think about what goes into making ketchup. Most of the time there’s a bottle of Heinz just sitting in the fridge and well it tastes exactly as it should.
So I started this recipe from scratch by reading ingredient labels on common ketchups tasting them and researching the process of making them. The result of this labor is a homemade ketchup recipe that is simple to make and tastes delicious.
While nothing can replace a flavor that is as deeply ingrained in our psyche as Heinz this ketchup had its own appeal. It was brighter and fresher than bottled ketchup with a natural tomato flavor that had just enough kick to clearly define itself as ketchup above any other tomato sauce. My wife and I enjoyed a plate of fries with this ketchup alongside another dish of Heinz. We happily alternated between the two appreciating each for its uniqueness.
